Shake weed is the small pieces of flower, leaf and trichomes that break off buds and collect at the bottom of a bag or jar during handling. It comes from the same plants as the buds, so it can be just as potent, but it’s usually drier, less consistent and sold for less. It’s best for rolling, baking and making butter.
Shake vs trim vs smalls
| Shake | Trim | Smalls | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Bits that fall off buds | Leaves cut away when trimming | Whole small buds |
| Potency | Often similar to the buds, but varies | Lower | Similar to big buds |
| Looks | Loose, crumbly | Leafy | Small, intact buds |
| Best for | Joints, edibles, butter | Extraction, edibles | Anything flower is used for |
Is shake good?
It depends on where it came from. Shake from good buds can be excellent value. Shake that’s mostly stems and leaf, or that’s been sitting a long time, will be harsher and weaker. Check that it smells fresh, looks green rather than brown, and isn’t full of stems or dust.
Best ways to use shake
- Joints: it’s already broken up, so there’s no grinding. See How to roll a joint.
- Cannabutter and oil: potency matters more than looks. See How to make cannabutter.
- Mixing: top up a bowl or blunt.
- Making your own kief: sift it through a fine screen.
Storing shake
Shake dries out faster than whole buds because it has more exposed surface. Keep it in an airtight glass jar, out of light and heat, and use it within a few weeks.
Common questions
Is shake weaker than buds?
Not necessarily. Shake from the same buds can be similar, but it’s less consistent and loses freshness faster.
Can you smoke shake?
Yes. It rolls easily into joints and blunts.
Why is shake cheaper?
It looks less appealing, is less consistent and dries out faster, so it’s priced lower.
Is shake the same as kief?
No. Kief is just the trichomes. Shake is plant material that includes some trichomes.
