To roll a joint, grind your flower, fold a filter tip, fill the paper, then pinch, tuck and roll it shut and lick the glue strip. It takes a few tries to get even, so don’t worry if the first one is lumpy. Below are steps for rolling by hand and with a joint roller.

You’ll need:

  • About 0.5–1 g of flower
  • A grinder, or clean fingers
  • Rolling papers (1¼ size is easiest to learn on)
  • A filter tip: a “crutch” made from thin card
  • Optional: a joint roller, and a pen or a poking tool to pack the end

Rolling by hand

  1. Grind the flower. Aim for a medium-fine grind with stems and seeds removed. Too fine burns fast; too coarse leaves gaps.
  2. Make the tip. Fold a strip of card into a small accordion (a W or M shape), then roll the rest of the strip around it.
  3. Fill the paper. Hold the paper with the glue strip at the top, facing you. Place the tip at one end and spread the flower evenly along the crease.
  4. Shape it. Roll the paper back and forth between your thumbs and fingers to pack the flower into a cylinder.
  5. Tuck. Tuck the near edge of the paper around the flower, starting at the tip end where it’s firmest.
  6. Roll and seal. Roll upward until only the glue strip shows, lick it lightly, and press it closed.
  7. Pack and twist. Tap or poke the open end to settle the flower, then twist the extra paper shut.

With a joint roller

  1. Open the roller and fill the channel evenly, with the tip at one end.
  2. Close it and roll a few times to pack the flower.
  3. Feed the paper in, glue strip up and facing you, between the rollers.
  4. Roll until only the glue strip shows, lick it, and finish rolling to seal.
  5. Open the roller, slide the joint out and pack the end.

Without a filter

You can skip the tip, but the end gets soggy and flower can get into your mouth. If you do, roll the paper a little tighter at the mouth end.

Common mistakes

  • Uneven filling: causes canoeing, where one side burns faster. Spread the flower evenly before rolling.
  • Rolling too tight: hard to pull through. Too loose: burns fast and harsh.
  • Too much saliva on the glue: the paper wrinkles and tears. A light touch is enough.
  • Overfilling: start with less flower than you think the paper can hold.
From our shelves To skip the rolling, the BallerClub AAA Indica Pre-Rolls come as 3 × 1 g. For rolling your own, see our Flower, including Tegridy Flower AAAA and AAA strains.

Common questions

How much weed goes in a joint?

Usually 0.5–1 g. A 1¼ paper fits about 0.5–0.75 g comfortably.

Are pre-rolls and joints the same?

Yes. A pre-roll is a joint that comes already rolled, usually with a filter tip.

Why does my joint keep going out?

It’s often packed too tight, or the flower is too moist. Loosen the pack slightly next time, and keep the joint lit with slow, steady puffs.

What’s the difference between a joint and a blunt?

A joint uses rolling paper; a blunt uses a cigar or tobacco-leaf wrap. See Blunt vs joint.
