There are 453.6 grams in a pound of weed, which is 16 ounces. Cannabis is sold in grams and in fractions of an ounce, and stores usually round an ounce to 28 grams (it’s actually 28.35). So a quarter is 7 grams, a half is 14 grams and an eighth is 3.5 grams.
Weed measurements at a glance
| Name | Also called | Grams |
|---|---|---|
| Gram | A g | 1 |
| Eighth | ⅛ oz, “an eight”, “a slice” | 3.5 |
| Quarter | ¼ oz, “a Q” | 7 |
| Half | ½ oz, “a half O” | 14 |
| Ounce | 1 oz, “an O”, “a zip” | 28 |
| Quarter pound | QP, 4 oz | 113.4 |
| Half pound | HP, 8 oz | 226.8 |
| Pound | LB, 16 oz | 453.6 |
Why “28 grams” and not 28.35?
An avoirdupois ounce is 28.35 g, but the cannabis market rounds down to 28 g for simple maths. A “quarter” is likewise 7 g rather than 7.09 g. If you’re comparing prices, check the gram weight on the listing.
How much is in a joint?
A typical joint holds 0.5 to 1 g, so an eighth rolls about 4 to 7 joints and an ounce about 28 to 56, depending on how you roll.
Comparing prices by weight
Larger amounts usually cost less per gram. To compare, divide the price by the grams: a 28 g ounce at any price works out to that price ÷ 28 per gram. See How much does weed cost? for typical Canadian ranges.
Other products, in dried-flower terms
Canada’s Cannabis Act limits adults to carrying 30 g of dried cannabis, or the equivalent, in public. For that limit, 1 g of dried flower counts the same as:
- 0.25 g of concentrate (shatter, resin, diamonds)
- 5 g of fresh cannabis
- 15 g of a solid edible product
- 70 g of a liquid product
