A brand new disposable vape that isn’t working is usually one of five things:
- packaging left on it
- a battery that needs its first charge
- a clog from cold oil
- a button lock
- a faulty unit
Work through the table below from the top, since the first fixes are the quickest.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No light, no vapour, never worked | A rubber plug or sticker still on, or a flat battery | Remove all seals from the mouthpiece and the bottom, then charge for 20–30 minutes |
| Light comes on, no vapour | Thick oil clogging the airway | Warm the pen in your hand for a minute, then take a few short, gentle puffs |
| Nothing happens when you press the button | Button lock is on | On models with a button, click it 5 times quickly to unlock (most button models use this) |
| Light blinks several times | Low battery, or pulling too hard | Charge it, then draw slowly like through a thin straw |
| Burnt taste from the first puff | Dry wick, or a defect | Let it stand upright for 10 minutes, then try short puffs; if it’s still burnt, the unit is faulty |
Fixing a clogged disposable
- Hold the pen in a closed hand, or keep it in a pocket for a few minutes, to loosen the oil.
- Take three or four short puffs without pressing hard. On button models, puff without pressing the button, so you’re only pulling air.
- If the mouthpiece looks blocked, clear it gently with a toothpick. Don’t push anything into the airway.
- Try again with a slow, steady draw.
Making a disposable work after it dies
If it stopped mid-way and has a charging port, it needs charging, not replacing. Charge it with a low-power USB charger rather than a fast phone charger. If it’s rechargeable and still has oil, a full charge brings it back.
If the oil is used up, it’s finished. Disposables aren’t built to be refilled. Never cut or pry one open: the battery inside can be damaged.
Common questions
Why is my new disposable vape blinking?
Blinking usually means low battery or too hard a pull. Charge it fully and draw more gently.
Can a disposable vape be dead out of the box?
Yes. The battery can drain in storage, so a first charge is the first thing to try.
Why does my disposable taste burnt when it’s new?
The wick may not have soaked up enough oil yet. Let it stand upright for a while and take short puffs. A burnt taste that won’t go away points to a faulty unit.
How do I dispose of a dead vape?
Take it to a battery recycling drop-off, since vapes contain lithium batteries. Many hardware and electronics stores accept them. Don’t put them in household garbage or recycling.
