A vape tastes burnt when the coil heats without enough oil on it. That usually means the cartridge or disposable is nearly empty, the voltage is too high, or you’re taking puffs too quickly for the oil to soak back into the wick. Most causes can be fixed. A coil that’s actually scorched can’t.
Find your problem
| What you notice | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Burnt taste, little vapour, almost no oil visible | Cart or disposable is empty | Replace it |
| Burnt taste on long or back-to-back puffs | Wick drying out (chain vaping) | Wait 30–60 seconds between puffs |
| Harsh from the first puff on a variable battery | Voltage too high | Lower the setting to about 2.5–3.3 V |
| Burnt after the cart sat on its side or in the cold | Oil pulled away from the coil | Stand it upright at room temperature for 10 minutes |
| Burnt taste every puff, even when full and at low voltage | Coil is scorched | Replace it; a burnt coil doesn’t recover |
| Weak, gurgling, then burnt | Clogged airflow | Clear the mouthpiece and take gentle draws |
Fixes, step by step
- Check the oil level. Hold the cart or tank up to the light. If the oil is below the inlet holes, it’s done.
- Rest it upright. Stand it mouthpiece-up at room temperature for 10 minutes so oil can reach the coil.
- Lower the voltage. On a 510 battery with settings, drop to the lowest one and work up only if the hits are too thin.
- Prime it. Take two or three short draws without pressing the button (or covering the airflow sensor) to pull oil into the wick.
- Slow down. Take 3–4 second draws with a short pause in between.
Can you unburn a vape?
Not really. If the burnt taste is from a dry wick, resting and priming brings it back. If the cotton or ceramic around the coil is actually scorched, the burnt flavour stays. With a disposable or a cart, that means replacing it.
Prevent it next time
- Use the lowest voltage that gives you enough vapour.
- Store carts and disposables upright, away from heat and cold.
- Replace a cart when you can see it’s nearly empty, rather than chasing the last drops.
Common questions
Why does my new cart taste burnt?
Usually the voltage is too high, or the oil hasn’t reached the coil yet. Let it stand upright, then use a low setting.
Is it bad to vape a burnt cart?
It’s harsh and unpleasant, and it means you’re heating the wick rather than oil. It’s better to stop and replace it.
How do I know my disposable is empty?
Thin vapour and a burnt taste while the battery is charged usually mean it’s out of oil.
Does chain vaping burn the coil?
It can. Back-to-back puffs don’t give the wick time to soak up more oil.
