The difference between a spliff and a joint is tobacco. A joint is cannabis rolled in paper. A spliff is cannabis mixed with tobacco, rolled in paper. A blunt is cannabis rolled in a tobacco-leaf wrap. People choose spliffs for a slower burn or to stretch their flower, but the tobacco adds nicotine.

Joint Spliff Blunt
What’s inside Cannabis only Cannabis and tobacco Cannabis only
Wrap Rolling paper Rolling paper Tobacco leaf or cigar wrap (hemp wraps exist)

Why people roll spliffs

  • Stretching flower: tobacco bulks it out.
  • Even burn: tobacco helps it stay lit.
  • Habit and region: spliffs are common in Europe, where mixing tobacco is traditional.

The nicotine trade-off

Tobacco contains nicotine, which is addictive. If you smoke cannabis regularly and don’t otherwise use tobacco, spliffs can build a nicotine habit. A plain joint, or a hemp wrap for a blunt, avoids it.

Which to choose

  • Pure cannabis flavour: a joint.
  • Slow burn, no nicotine: a hemp-wrapped blunt.
  • Making a small amount go further: share a smaller joint instead of adding tobacco.

Common questions

What is a spliff?

A hand-rolled mix of cannabis and tobacco in rolling paper.

Is a spliff stronger than a joint?

Usually not in THC, since part of the mix is tobacco. The nicotine can add a head rush of its own.

Are pre-rolls spliffs?

Generally no. Pre-rolls are joints: cannabis only, in paper.

What’s the difference between a blunt and a spliff?

A spliff mixes tobacco into the filling. A blunt keeps the filling pure cannabis, but the wrap is usually tobacco.
