To roll a blunt, split a cigar wrap or open a blunt wrap, fill it with ground cannabis, then tuck, roll and seal it by moistening the edge. Blunts are bigger and burn slower than joints, and the wrap is thicker, so it takes a little more patience to roll evenly.
You’ll need:
- A blunt wrap: tobacco leaf, a cigarillo you split open, or a tobacco-free hemp wrap
- About 1 to 2 g of flower, ground medium-coarse
- Something sharp to split a cigarillo, if you use one
- A lighter to dry the seam
Step by step
- Prepare the wrap. For a cigarillo, slice it lengthwise and empty out the tobacco. For a pre-cut wrap, just open it.
- Moisten it slightly. A quick lick or a damp fingertip makes the leaf flexible so it doesn’t crack.
- Fill it evenly with ground flower along the length of the wrap.
- Shape it by rolling the wrap back and forth between your fingers to pack the flower into a cylinder.
- Tuck and roll. Tuck the near edge under the flower, then roll up toward the far edge.
- Seal it. Moisten the far edge and press it down along the seam.
- Dry the seam by passing a lighter flame quickly along it, not touching it, so it holds.
Common mistakes
- Wrap too dry: it cracks. Moisten it a little first.
- Too wet: it tears and burns unevenly.
- Uneven filling: causes runs, where one side burns faster.
- Grinding too fine: it packs too tight to draw.
Tobacco or not?
Traditional blunt wraps and cigarillos are made of tobacco and contain nicotine. If you’d rather avoid it, hemp blunt wraps roll the same way without tobacco.
Common questions
How much weed goes in a blunt?
Usually 1 to 2 g, roughly twice a joint.
Why does my blunt keep going out?
It’s often packed too tight or the wrap is too damp. Let it dry a little and puff steadily.
What are blunts made of?
A tobacco-leaf wrap or hollowed cigar. Hemp wraps are the tobacco-free option.
What’s better, a pre-roll or a blunt?
A pre-roll is a paper joint, already rolled. A blunt is larger and slower-burning, with a tobacco or hemp wrap. It’s personal preference.
