How to Make Pot Brownies: Recipe and Dosing

To make pot brownies, replace some or all of the butter in a brownie recipe with cannabutter made from decarbed cannabis. Mix the batter thoroughly so the THC is evenly spread, bake as usual, and cut equal squares so each one carries a similar dose.

Before you start: Health Canada suggests starting with 2.5 mg of THC or less. Eaten cannabis can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to start working and up to 4 hours to peak. Label the brownies, and keep them away from children and pets.

Ingredients (16 squares, 8 × 8 in pan)

½ cup (115 g) cannabutter, melted (or half cannabutter, half regular butter for a milder batch)
1 cup sugar
2 eggs and 1 tsp vanilla
⅓ cup cocoa powder
½ cup flour, ¼ tsp salt and ¼ tsp baking powder

Method

Heat the oven to 175 °C (350 °F) and line the pan with parchment.
Whisk the melted cannabutter with the sugar, then the eggs and vanilla.
Stir in the cocoa, flour, salt and baking powder until there are no streaks. Mix well, since uneven batter means uneven doses.
Spread evenly in the pan and bake 20 to 25 minutes, until the centre is just set.
Cool completely, then cut into 16 equal squares with a ruler.

How much weed goes in a brownie?

Work backwards from the dose you want per square:

Flower grams × THC % × 1,000 × 0.877 ≈ the most THC your cannabutter can hold.
Example: 3.5 g at 20% in 1 cup of butter ≈ 614 mg in the cup, so ½ cup ≈ 307 mg.
307 mg ÷ 16 squares ≈ 19 mg each at most. Some is lost in infusion, so it’s usually less.
For smaller doses, use half cannabutter and half regular butter, or cut 32 squares.

Start with a small corner, and wait at least 2 hours before having more.

Can you use box brownie mix?

Yes. Replace the oil or butter the box asks for with an equal amount of cannabutter or cannabis oil.

How should I store them?

Sealed and labelled, for a few days at room temperature or a couple of months in the freezer.
