To make weed cookies, you first infuse butter with decarbed cannabis, then use that cannabutter in place of regular butter in a cookie recipe. The two steps that matter most are decarbing the flower so the THC is active, and mixing the dough thoroughly so each cookie gets a similar dose.

Before you start: homemade edibles are hard to dose precisely. Health Canada suggests starting with 2.5 mg of THC or less. Eaten cannabis can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to begin working and up to 4 hours to reach full effect. Label your cookies, and store them where children and pets can’t reach them.

Step 1: make the cannabutter

  1. Decarb your flower in the oven at about 115 °C (240 °F) for 30 to 45 minutes. See How to decarb weed.
  2. Melt 1 cup (225 g) of butter with 1 cup of water in a saucepan over low heat. The water keeps the butter from scorching.
  3. Stir in the decarbed flower and keep it at a gentle simmer, never boiling, for 2 to 3 hours. Stir now and then.
  4. Strain through cheesecloth into a container. Don’t squeeze hard, or it will taste grassy.
  5. Chill until the butter sets on top, then pour off the water underneath.

More detail, strength tables and storage tips are in How to make cannabutter.

Step 2: bake the cookies

Makes about 24 cookies.

  • ½ cup (115 g) cannabutter, softened
  • ½ cup (115 g) regular butter, softened
  • ¾ cup brown sugar and ½ cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs and 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2¼ cups flour, 1 tsp baking soda and ½ tsp salt
  • 1½ cups chocolate chips
  1. Heat the oven to 175 °C (350 °F). This is fine for baking: the inside of a cookie stays well below oven temperature.
  2. Cream both butters with the sugars, then beat in the eggs and vanilla.
  3. Mix in the dry ingredients, then the chips. Mix thoroughly, since unevenly mixed dough gives uneven doses.
  4. Scoop equal portions, about 2 tablespoons each, onto a lined tray.
  5. Bake 9 to 11 minutes, until the edges are golden.

Working out the dose

You can estimate the most THC a batch could contain:

  • Grams of flower × THC % × 1,000 = mg of THCA. For example, 3.5 g at 20% is 700 mg.
  • About 87.7% of THCA becomes THC once decarbed, so roughly 614 mg in the whole cup of cannabutter.
  • This recipe uses half a cup, so about 307 mg goes into the dough.
  • Divide by the number of cookies: at most about 13 mg each across 24 cookies.
  • Some THC is always lost in infusion, so the real amount is lower.

That’s an upper limit, not a promise. Try a quarter of a cookie first, and wait at least 2 hours.

From our shelves If you’d rather skip the baking, our Edibles are made with a set 100 mg per piece, so you can portion them more predictably than homemade.

Common questions

How long does a weed cookie take to kick in?

Usually 30 minutes to 2 hours, with the full effect at up to 4 hours. Don’t eat more in the meantime.

Does baking destroy THC?

Not at normal baking times. The inside of the cookie stays far cooler than the oven setting.

Can I use oil instead of butter?

Yes. Infused coconut or vegetable oil works in many recipes. See How to make cannabis oil.

How should I store weed cookies?

In a sealed, clearly labelled container, away from children and pets, for a few days at room temperature or longer in the freezer.
