Live rosin is a solventless cannabis concentrate made from fresh-frozen plants using only ice, water, heat and pressure. It’s prized for flavour: freezing the plants at harvest keeps the terpenes that drying would lose. It also takes the most labour of any common extract to make.

Live rosin in one line: fresh-frozen cannabis, washed into ice water hash, then pressed into oil with gentle heat.

How live rosin is made

  1. Freeze. The plants are frozen right after harvest, skipping the usual drying and curing.
  2. Wash. The frozen material is stirred in ice water. The cold makes the resin glands (trichomes) brittle, so they snap off and sink.
  3. Collect and dry. The trichomes are filtered through fine mesh bags, giving bubble hash, which is then freeze-dried.
  4. Press. The hash goes into a rosin press, where low heat and pressure squeeze out the oil.

The result is often stirred or left to cure into a texture called badder, jam or sauce.

Live rosin vs live resin

Both start from fresh-frozen plants, so both are “live”. Live resin is extracted with a hydrocarbon solvent, which is then purged out. Live rosin uses only ice water and a press. People who choose rosin usually want the solventless process and the flavour it keeps. Live resin is generally easier to find and costs less.

Live rosin vs hash rosin

All live rosin is hash rosin: it’s pressed from hash. “Live” says the hash came from fresh-frozen plants rather than dried, cured flower.

Why live rosin costs more

The yield is small. Only a few percent of a fresh-frozen plant’s weight ends up as finished rosin. Each step is slow, and the starting flower has to be high quality, because a solventless process can’t hide a weak plant. That combination keeps the price higher than solvent-made extracts.

From our shelves Our hash rosin is in Hash Rosin: Drago, Choka Cola and Do-Si-Killa. Each product page shows whether that batch is in stock.

Common questions

Can you smoke live rosin in a joint?

Yes. A small amount rolled into a joint, or added on top of flower in a bowl, works. It burns hot and fast, so less is more.

Can live rosin get you high?

Yes. It’s a concentrate, so a small amount carries much more THC than the same amount of flower.

Is live rosin better than live resin?

It depends what you value. Rosin is made without solvents and many find it more flavourful. Resin gives a similar fresh-plant taste at a lower price.

Why is it called rosin?

The name comes from violin rosin, the hardened tree resin made by heating and pressing. Cannabis rosin is made the same way, with heat and pressure.
