The difference between resin and rosin is how each is extracted. Resin, as in live resin or cured resin, is made with a solvent such as butane or propane that’s purged out afterwards. Rosin is made with only heat and pressure, so it’s called solventless.

Resin Rosin
How it’s made Hydrocarbon solvent extraction, then purging Heat and pressure in a rosin press
Solvent used Yes, removed before sale None
Starting material Fresh-frozen plants (live) or dried trim (cured) Flower, kief or ice-water hash
Yield High Lower, especially from hash
Typical price Lower to mid Higher, especially live hash rosin
Common forms Sauce, budder, sugar, diamonds, carts Badder, jam, cold-cure rosin

How rosin is made

  1. Material goes into a fine mesh filter bag. Top-shelf rosin starts with ice-water hash; budget rosin starts with flower.
  2. The bag sits between two heated plates in a press.
  3. The press squeezes it, and oil seeps out onto parchment paper.
  4. The oil is collected and often cured in a jar for a few days to set its texture.

Live rosin is the same process using hash made from fresh-frozen plants. Our live rosin guide covers it in detail.

How resin is made

A solvent is passed through the plant material in a closed-loop system and dissolves the cannabinoids and terpenes. The solvent is then evaporated and purged off under heat and vacuum. Licensed producers test the finished product for residual solvents.

Live resin vs live rosin

“Live” means the plants were frozen fresh at harvest instead of dried, so more of their terpenes survive. Both live resin and live rosin start that way. The difference is the same as above: live resin is extracted with a solvent, while live rosin is pressed from ice-water hash made from those frozen plants.

Live resin Live rosin
Starting material Fresh-frozen plants Hash washed from fresh-frozen plants
Solvent Yes, purged out None
Flavour Bright and strain-true Bright and strain-true, often called the purest
Price Mid to high Among the highest of any concentrate

Which to choose

  • Value per gram: resin.
  • Solventless is a priority for you: rosin.
  • Variety of textures and vape carts: resin, which comes in far more formats.
  • Flavour: both can be excellent. Live versions of each keep the most terpenes.
From our shelves For resin, see Cured Resin and Fresh Frozen Live Resin. Hash rosin is listed under Hash Rosin when we have it in stock.

Common questions

What’s stronger, live resin or rosin?

Neither is stronger by method alone. Potency depends on the strain and the starting material, so check the THC percentage on the label.

Is rosin the same as resin in a pipe?

No. The sticky residue that builds up inside a pipe is also called resin, but it’s a burnt by-product. Don’t smoke it; clean the pipe instead.

How much flower makes 1 g of rosin?

It varies widely by strain and press. Flower often returns somewhere around 15–25% of its weight, so roughly 4–7 g of flower for 1 g of rosin.

Is live rosin better than live resin?

Not automatically. Live rosin is solventless and usually costs more; live resin is easier to find and often cheaper. Both keep the fresh-frozen flavour.

Can I smoke rosin in a joint?

Yes. Roll a thin strand of rosin and lay it through the flower, or dab a little on the outside. It burns slower than flower, so use a small amount.
