CBD oil does expire. Every bottle should carry a best-before or expiry date, and after that the CBD slowly loses strength and the carrier oil can go rancid. Stored sealed, upright, and away from heat and light, it keeps until that date. Once opened, air exposure starts it ageing faster.

How to tell if CBD oil has gone bad

What you notice What it means Use it?
Sour, bitter or paint-like smell Carrier oil has gone rancid No
Very cloudy, or thick and gummy Oil breaking down, or stored too cold or hot Let it reach room temperature; discard if it stays cloudy
Darker than when you bought it Light or air exposure Weaker, but usually fine if it smells normal
Past the best-before date, smells normal Potency may have dropped Your call; expect it to be milder
Mould or bits floating Contamination No

What makes it last longer

  • Keep it dark: in the original tinted bottle, in a cupboard or drawer.
  • Keep it cool: room temperature or below, away from the stove and windows.
  • Keep it sealed: close the cap tightly after every use.
  • Keep the dropper clean: don’t touch it to your mouth, which adds bacteria.

The fridge can help in hot weather but may make the oil thick. Let it warm up before measuring.

Does expired CBD oil still work?

It usually has some CBD left, just less than the label says. If you rely on a set amount, a fresh bottle gives a more predictable dose.

Isolate vs full spectrum

Both age the same way: the main factor is the carrier oil. Full-spectrum oils also contain terpenes, which fade first, so the smell and taste change before the potency does.

From our shelves Our CBD Products include Ritual Drops Reset, a CBD isolate tincture, and Drift, a CBD:THC tincture. Check the date on each bottle and store them as above.

Common questions

How long does CBD oil last once opened?

Until its best-before date if stored well, though quality slowly declines once air gets in.

Can expired CBD oil make you sick?

Rancid or contaminated oil can upset your stomach. If it smells off, throw it out.

Should CBD oil be refrigerated?

It doesn’t have to be. A cool, dark cupboard is enough for most oils.

Does CBD oil lose potency?

Slowly, with heat, light and air. Good storage keeps it close to the label.
