Weed gummies do go bad, but slowly. Sealed and stored well, most stay good until the best-before date on the package, often many months away. Once a bag is open, air, heat and light start to change the texture and wear down the THC. Mould or a sour smell means it’s time to throw them out.
How to check your gummies
| What you notice | What it means | Eat or toss? |
|---|---|---|
| Fuzzy spots or a white or green film | Mould | Toss the whole bag |
| Sour, musty or fermented smell | Spoiling | Toss |
| Wet, sweaty or stuck together | Heat or humidity exposure | Usually safe if there’s no mould; potency may be lower |
| Hard or chewy-dry | Moisture has evaporated | Safe if there’s no mould; may feel weaker |
| Sugar coating gone grainy | Normal ageing of the coating | Fine |
| Past the best-before date, but looks and smells normal | Quality may have declined | Your call; expect a milder effect |
Do THC gummies lose potency?
Yes, gradually. THC breaks down with heat, light and air, partly into CBN, a cannabinoid that isn’t as intoxicating. So an old gummy is usually weaker, not stronger. That makes dosing less predictable, so start with a smaller piece from an older bag.
How to store edibles
- Keep them in the original package or an airtight container.
- Store them somewhere cool, dark and dry, like a cupboard away from the stove.
- Avoid hot cars and sunny windowsills; gummies melt and stick together.
- The fridge helps in hot weather. Let them come to room temperature before opening, to avoid condensation.
- Lock them away from children and pets. Edibles look like ordinary candy.
Can you freeze gummies?
Yes. Freezing in an airtight bag slows both spoilage and THC loss. Thaw them sealed so moisture doesn’t collect on the surface.
Common questions
Do THC gummies expire?
They have a best-before date rather than a hard expiry. They can still be safe after it, but potency and texture decline. Mould or an off smell means they’ve gone bad.
Can expired edibles make you sick?
Mouldy or spoiled ones can, just like any food. A gummy that’s simply old and dry is more likely to feel weaker.
How long do edibles last once opened?
It depends on the product and how they’re stored. Sealed tightly in a cool, dark place, an opened bag keeps far longer than one left open on a counter.
Do edibles get stronger with age?
No. THC slowly breaks down over time, so older edibles tend to be weaker.
