THCP (tetrahydrocannabiphorol) is a cannabinoid closely related to THC, first identified by Italian researchers in 2019. It occurs naturally in only trace amounts. Most THCP sold online is made in a lab, usually from CBD. In lab tests it binds to the body’s cannabinoid receptors much more strongly than THC, which is why it’s marketed as extra potent, but there’s very little research on its effects in people.

In short:

  • A natural cannabinoid found in tiny amounts, so commercial THCP is mostly semi-synthetic.
  • Its molecule has a longer side chain than THC’s, which is linked to its stronger receptor binding in the lab.
  • Human research is minimal, so its strength and safety in people aren’t well understood.

Is THCP legal in Canada?

The Cannabis Act covers the cannabis plant’s cannabinoids and synthetic versions of them, so THCP products are regulated as cannabis. Many THCP vapes and gummies sold online come from unregulated sources, where the label may not match what’s inside.

Things to know before trying it

  • Potency claims are untested in people. Treat any new cannabinoid as potentially strong and start with a very small amount.
  • Semi-synthetic means chemistry. Converting CBD can leave by-products if it isn’t done and tested properly.
  • Edible timing still applies. Eaten products can take up to 2 hours to begin working.
From our shelves We don’t carry THCP. Our products list THC, and where relevant CBD, on the label, such as our THCA diamonds and our CBD products.

Common questions

Is THCP stronger than THC?

In lab tests it binds to cannabinoid receptors far more strongly, but how that translates to effects in people hasn’t been studied much.

Is THCP natural?

It occurs naturally in trace amounts. Most THCP products are made from CBD in a lab.

Will THCP show up on a drug test?

Possibly. Its by-products can resemble THC’s, and products sometimes contain THC too.

When was THCP discovered?

In 2019, by a team of Italian researchers who isolated it from a cannabis variety.
