Budder is a cannabis concentrate whipped during processing until it has a soft, creamy texture like butter. It’s made the same way as shatter, using solvent extraction, but the extract is stirred while it’s purged, so it turns opaque and spreadable instead of setting into glass. It’s easy to scoop, which is why many people find it the simplest concentrate to dab.

In short:

  • A solvent-extracted concentrate with a creamy, cake-frosting texture.
  • Usually 70–90% THC, often with plenty of terpenes.
  • Used for dabbing, in a dab pen, or on top of a bowl.

Budder vs other concentrates

Concentrate Texture Handling
Budder (badder) Creamy, whipped Easy to scoop
Crumble Dry, crumbly Easy, but bits fall off
Shatter Hard, glassy Snaps; sticky when warm
Sauce Runny, with crystals Needs a scoop tool
Sugar Wet, grainy Sticky

“Badder” and “batter” are other names for the same thing. Budder and crumble are close relatives: crumble is drier, budder is whipped more and holds more moisture.

How budder is made

A solvent such as butane is passed through plant material to dissolve the cannabinoids and terpenes. The solvent is then purged off under heat and vacuum. While it purges, the extract is whipped, which brings air into it and lets THCA start to crystallize finely. That gives budder its colour and texture. In Canada, making concentrates at home with solvents isn’t allowed, and it’s dangerous.

How to use budder

  • Dabbing: scoop a rice-grain-sized amount onto a warm banger. See How to dab.
  • Dab pen: drop a small amount into the chamber. See What is a dab pen?
  • On a bowl: put a small dab on top of flower.

Storing budder

Keep it in a sealed silicone or glass jar, somewhere cool and dark. Heat makes it oily, and air and light fade the flavour over time.

Common questions

Is budder stronger than shatter?

They’re usually similar in THC. Budder often holds more terpenes, so it can taste stronger.

What’s the difference between budder and wax?

“Wax” is a catch-all slang term for soft concentrates. Budder is one specific type.

Can you smoke budder without a rig?

Yes, with a dab pen or on top of flower in a bowl or joint.

Why is my budder getting runny?

It’s too warm. Store it somewhere cooler; it firms up again.
