A weed high from smoking or vaping can last up to 6 hours, according to Health Canada, and an edible high can last up to 12 hours. Some lingering effects can last up to 24 hours either way. How you take it changes the timing most: inhaled cannabis starts within minutes, while edibles can take up to 2 hours to begin.

Why edibles last longer
When you inhale, THC goes from the lungs straight into the bloodstream. When you eat it, it passes through the digestive system and the liver first, which turns some of it into a compound (11-hydroxy-THC) that lasts longer. That’s why edibles start slower, often feel stronger and run much longer.
What makes a high last longer
- Dose: more THC means longer effects.
- Potency: concentrates and dabs are stronger than flower.
- Tolerance: regular users notice shorter, milder effects.
- Food: edibles on a full stomach can take longer to start.
- Mixing: combining cannabis with alcohol increases impairment.
If it’s too much
Find a calm, comfortable place, sip water and wait; the effects pass with time. Don’t take more to “balance it out”, and don’t drive. If you’re worried about yourself or someone else, call 911 or your provincial health line.
When is it safe to drive?
Not while you feel any effect, and remember that residual effects can last up to 24 hours. Plan another way home.
